The TL:DR

If you’re running advertising on Meta, it is ESSENTIAL that you’re tracking the impact of your ads (otherwise, how do you know what’s working or not?!). So step 1 is the Meta Pixel, which is a short piece of code you install on your website that tracks user behaviour through cookies.

Here, we give you step-by-step instructions on how to install the Meta pixel. If you’re unsure whether you already have it installed on your website, jump to our article on ‘using the Meta Pixel helper’ to check your installation.

1. Create a Meta Pixel:

  • Go to your Meta Business Manager.
  • Click on 'Events Manager'.
  • Click on the 'Connect a Data Source' and select 'Web'.
  • Select 'Meta Pixel' and click 'Connect'.
  • Add your Pixel Name and enter your website URL to check for easy setup options.
  • Click Continue.

2. Install Meta Pixel Code:

Once you have created your Meta pixel, you will be given a Pixel ID. You'll need to install Meta pixel code on your website. There are a few ways to do this:

  • Using a Plugin:
    • If you are using a Content Management System (CMS) like WordPress, there are plugins available that will allow you to install the Meta pixel without having to edit your website code.
  • Or Manually Adding Code to Website:
    • In the Events Manager, select the pixel you want to set up.
    • Click 'Continue Pixel Setup' and select 'Install code manually'.
    • Copy the base code provided.
    • Paste the base code at the bottom of the header section, just above the tag of each page of your website.

3. Check Your Installation:

Once you have installed your Meta pixel, you can check that it is working correctly using the Meta Pixel Helper, which is a Chrome extension that you can download and install from the Chrome Web Store. We’ve written a guide to using the pixel helper here!

4. Set up Events:

  • Events are the actions that people take on your website (e.g., page views, clicks). You'll need to set up events to track the actions that are most important to your business.
  • You can set up events using the Event Setup Tool within the Events Manager or manually add event code to your website.

Remember to update your website's privacy policy to reflect the use of the Meta pixel and how you will be using it to collect and process data.

And that's another thing done.
